Internal leadership crisis and judicial challenges within Turkey's CHP
The Republican People's Party (CHP) in Turkey is facing an institutional crisis following court rulings regarding its 2023 party congress. The Ankara Regional Court issued a ruling on the validity of the congress, which triggered a conflict between current leader Ozgur Ozel and former leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu. The Supreme Election Council (YSK) stated it lacks the authority to overturn the court's decision, directing the matter to the Supreme Court of Turkey. Amid these events, Kilicdaroglu called for a disciplinary meeting, while Ozel has advocated for an extraordinary congress to resolve the deadlock. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan publicly criticized the opposition party, characterizing its current state as a focus on internal power struggles rather than national concerns. Meanwhile, the CHP central committee is scheduled to meet on June 11, and parliamentary group meetings are being coordinated by both factions. The legal uncertainty continues to disrupt the party's operations as it awaits a final decision from the Supreme Court.
