EU Commissioner Kadis announces the OceanEye initiative
On Tuesday, EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Kostas Kadis announced the upcoming presentation of the OceanEye initiative to the College of Commissioners on Wednesday. The project, part of the Ocean Pact, aims to enhance maritime surveillance and environmental monitoring. The initiative consists of two components: improving coordination within the EU and establishing an international alliance. This alliance is scheduled for official announcement at the UN General Assembly in September, where participating nations will contribute infrastructure, funding, personnel, or data. Commissioner Kadis highlighted that only 5% of the marine environment is currently understood, noting that better data is essential for managing ecosystems and predicting extreme weather events. Furthermore, the Commissioner announced two upcoming strategies focusing on coastal and island regions and their connection to future EU funding tools.
