United Nations General Assembly elects new non-permanent Security Council members
The United Nations General Assembly conducted elections to select five new non-permanent members for the Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. Zimbabwe was elected to represent the African group with 182 votes, while Trinidad and Tobago was elected for the Latin American and Caribbean group with 181 votes. Portugal and Austria secured the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group with 134 and 131 votes respectively, while Germany remained unselected with 104 votes. The Asian-Pacific seat remained contested through multiple rounds; Kyrgyzstan led in the first three rounds but failed to reach the required two-thirds majority. In the fourth round, the Philippines secured the seat with 49 votes against Kyrgyzstan's 42. Following the results, Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger expressed gratitude for the international support. Election to the Council requires a two-thirds majority of the voting member states present.
