Record-breaking spring temperatures recorded in France and Norway
Météo-France reported that the 2026 spring season, spanning March to May, was the warmest since records began in 1900. The average temperature reached 13.8 degrees Celsius, which is 1.7 degrees above the seasonal average, surpassing previous records from 2011 and 2020. A severe late-May heatwave contributed significantly to this outcome, causing monthly temperature records to be broken across the country. Additionally, prolonged heat and a lack of rainfall led to significant soil dryness by the end of the period. Simultaneously, Norway experienced its warmest spring since measurements started in 1901, with average temperatures 2.1 degrees Celsius above normal levels. The most notable anomalies in Norway were observed in northern regions, including the Svalbard archipelago, where April temperatures were 5 to 6 degrees higher than typical averages.
