History and function of the House of Representatives of Cyprus
Since its establishment on August 16, 1960, the House of Representatives of Cyprus has operated for 66 years, holding 18 elections for its President. Thirteen individuals have held the office, either permanently or on an interim basis, including Glafcos Clerides, Tassos Papadopoulos, and Annita Demetriou. The House President is responsible for leading plenary sessions, maintaining order, and deputizing for the President of the Republic if necessary. Elections for this position occur at the start of each legislative term or in cases of vacancy. Historically, 12 elections were regular occurrences following legislative elections, while six were extraordinary due to specific circumstances. The inaugural President was Glafcos Clerides, who served until 1976. The procedures have evolved over time, with the current session marking the 19th instance of electing a legislative leader in the institution's history.
