Five Eyes alliance warns of Chinese espionage via professional networking platforms
On June 3, intelligence agencies from the Five Eyes alliance, including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, issued a joint warning regarding Chinese espionage operations. The alliance reported that Chinese intelligence officers are posing as recruiters, consultants, or researchers on professional networking platforms such as LinkedIn, Indeed, and Upwork to target government and military officials. These actors use fake job advertisements to identify and recruit individuals with high-level security clearances. The objective is to extract non-public military, political, and economic information to secure a strategic advantage. The agencies noted that some previous cases have already resulted in criminal prosecutions. Targeted individuals include academics, think tank personnel, and service members, particularly those operating in the Indo-Pacific region. The communication highlights the systematic use of legitimate online tools to compromise national security.
