European commission report on energy consumption in Cyprus households
A report from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre highlights that heating and cooling account for approximately 70% of final household energy consumption in Cyprus. The data shows that Cyprus has 81% fewer heating degree days compared to the EU average, but 610% more cooling degree days. Currently, about 15% of Cypriot households struggle to keep their homes adequately warm, and 8% report overdue utility bills. Renewable energy sources provide approximately 43% of the total energy used for heating and cooling across all sectors in the country. Statistics indicate that 150,000 households, or about 39% of the total, rely on oil or gas boilers for heating. Meanwhile, heat pumps are primarily utilized for cooling purposes, with the output for cooling exceeding that of heating by more than five times. The findings are based on aggregated data from Eurostat, EurObserv’ER, the European Heat Pump Association, and national statistical authorities.
