European Commission to release report on Cyprus Schengen accession

During the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg, EU Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner confirmed that the European Commission will soon publish its evaluation report regarding Cyprus’ application for Schengen Area membership. Brunner emphasized that while the Commission is focused on ensuring Cyprus meets strict Schengen standards, the final decision on accession timing and procedures remains with the Council of the European Union. Cypriot Justice Minister Kostas Fytiris, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Migration and International Protection Nicholas Ioannides, noted that Cyprus has been aligning its national policies with the Schengen acquis since 2004. Fytiris stated that the country has already addressed approximately 120 recommendations provided by the EU and expressed optimism that Cyprus will be fully prepared for integration by the end of 2026. The Commissioner acknowledged the progress made by Cyprus and expressed gratitude for the cooperation during the evaluation process. This report is viewed as a crucial step for the country's formal evaluation path. The discussions occurred during the annual presentation of the State of Schengen Report to EU ministers.
