At least 49 people die of thirst in Sahara desert

Forty-nine people from Niger died of thirst in the Sahara desert after their truck broke down while returning from a festival in Mali. The vehicle was stranded more than 80 kilometers west of Assamaka, a border point between Niger and Algeria. Despite efforts by the driver and passengers to repair the truck, they were unable to fix it or secure water in the extreme heat. Two survivors managed to trek across the desert to alert authorities, who subsequently buried the victims in mass graves. Local authorities confirmed the tragedy, noting that the group had veered off their intended route from the town of Telhandek. During the recovery operation, rescue teams encountered another group of over 60 people stranded in a different vehicle due to a battery failure. This region is known for being a dangerous crossing point for migrants, with past incidents including a 2013 tragedy where 93 people perished. NGOs report that dozens of other fatalities have occurred in the Nigerien desert throughout 2025.
