Controversy surrounding the election of the Speaker of the House in Cyprus
Annita Demetriou was re-elected as President of the House of Representatives in Cyprus with the decisive support of the 'Amessi Dimokratia' (Immediate Democracy) party, led by Fidias Panagiotou. Following the vote, questions emerged regarding the nature of the negotiations behind this political alliance. Nikolas Papadopoulos, President of DIKO, revealed that his party had held talks with Panagiotou but ultimately failed to secure his support. Papadopoulos stated that while they reached a consensus on policy proposals such as pensions and social benefits, negotiations stalled due to Panagiotou's demand for the production of TikTok videos featuring government ministers and the President of the Republic. Papadopoulos explicitly denied claims made by DISY’s parliamentary representative, Dimitris Demetriou, that he himself had filmed videos with Panagiotou during the negotiation process. The move by 'Amessi Dimokratia' to support Demetriou sparked public debate, particularly regarding the perceived shift in the party's stance toward DISY, given previous critical remarks made by Panagiotou against the party's leadership. Both the opposition and internal factions within political parties have expressed skepticism regarding the timing and substance of the arrangements made during this election process.
