Mazotos community takes legal action against mobile desalination plant project
The Mazotos Community Council in Larnaca has filed a court injunction to suspend the construction of a mobile desalination unit in the Petounta area. Council president Giorgos Dimitriou expressed dissatisfaction with the project's environmental studies, labeling them as inadequate and rushed. The community claims that laying pipes on the seabed will cause irreversible damage to protected Posidonia seagrass meadows, which are essential to the marine ecosystem. Residents have already held a protest to voice their concerns over potential environmental and public health risks. The community intends to submit a private expert study to the Minister of Agriculture to support their claims. Dimitriou emphasized that residents refuse to discuss compensatory benefits until comprehensive environmental and health impact studies are conducted. Furthermore, the council is lobbying for the area to be designated as a tourist zone to prevent future industrial installations. The local authorities maintain that their primary goal is the protection of the coastal environment rather than negotiating financial compensation.
