EU Joint Research Centre report on energy consumption in Cyprus

A report published on June 4 by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre reveals that heating and cooling account for approximately 70% of energy consumption in Cypriot households. Cooling demand on the island is 610% higher than the EU average, while heating demand is 81% lower. Currently, 39% of households, or 150,000 units, still rely on obsolete diesel or gas boilers. Renewable energy sources cover 43% of the total energy used for heating and cooling across the economy. Social data indicates that 15% of families cannot afford to heat their homes adequately, and 8% have outstanding utility bills. Furthermore, 57% of buildings were constructed before the 2000 energy efficiency standards were implemented. Substituting fuel boilers with heat pumps could reduce energy consumption by 83% and CO2 emissions by 68%. Government subsidies are currently available to cover up to 60% of the cost for such installations, aligning with the EU goal to double energy efficiency improvements by 2030.
