Cyprus officials highlight climate change risks on World Environment Day

On the occasion of World Environment Day, observed on June 5, the Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture and the Commissioner for the Environment released statements regarding the island's climate challenges. The government emphasizes that Cyprus is situated in the Eastern Mediterranean, a region identified as highly vulnerable to climate change. Current impacts include prolonged drought, rising temperatures, increased wildfire risks, and pressure on water resources. Authorities noted that these factors negatively affect agricultural production, biodiversity, public health, and national infrastructure. The Ministry of Agriculture stated that the country aims to transition toward a more sustainable development model, noting that the National Strategy was updated in 2025. Proposed solutions include ecosystem restoration, sustainable water management, and the expansion of urban greenery. Experts further warn that households across the island are expected to face significant financial and social consequences due to these climatic shifts.
