Police investigate threats against House Speaker Annita Demetriou

Cypriot authorities are investigating three threatening emails received by the Democratic Rally (DISY) party offices on June 3, 2026. The emails allegedly contained information regarding a potential assassination attempt against House Speaker and DISY leader Annita Demetriou. Party spokesman Onoufrios Koullas confirmed the receipt of the messages and noted that security details were notified immediately. Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis held a telephone conversation with Demetriou to discuss the threats and concerns regarding a public leak of the information. While authorities have declined to comment on specific security measures for operational reasons, they stated that necessary precautions are being taken. DISY officials expressed concern over the security breach, questioning how the confidential information became public. Investigations are ongoing, with preliminary estimates suggesting the emails may have originated from an international address. Police maintain they are treating the complaint with the highest level of seriousness.
