Researchers test first AI-designed vaccine in human trials

A research team from the University of Cambridge has conducted the first human clinical trials of a vaccine featuring a critical antigen designed entirely by artificial intelligence. The vaccine aims to protect against the entire family of coronaviruses, including all Covid-19 variants and animal-derived strains that could potentially spark future pandemics. Researchers used genetic data from numerous known coronaviruses to create a so-called super-antigen intended to train the immune system to recognize common features across a wide range of viruses. Professor Jonathan Heaney stated that this technology marks a fundamentally new approach to vaccine development. The initial phase involved 39 volunteers to assess safety, yielding results described as encouraging with moderate immune responses. A second study involving approximately 200 participants is currently underway. The project seeks to move beyond reactive measures, aiming to stay ahead of future viral threats.
