Larnaca launches Larnaca-26 water conservation campaign
The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has launched the 'Larnaca-26' campaign, aiming to reduce daily per capita water consumption by 26 litres by September. Currently, Cypriots consume an average of 140 litres daily, higher than the European Union average of 125 litres. Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou and DLGO president Angelos Hadjicharalambous emphasized that while current dam levels are improved compared to last year, conservation remains vital. The campaign includes the distribution of three million shower nozzles and flow reducers, alongside a new digital platform providing real-time data on water reserves. The government is also expanding desalination infrastructure with a goal to fully cover national water needs by next year. While some sources suggest the target aims to bring consumption below 115 litres, officials specifically highlighted the 26-litre reduction goal. The initiative will be promoted across various sectors, including hotels, local businesses, and social media. Authorities identified climate change as a persistent threat, necessitating a shift toward more responsible water management habits.
