President Christodoulides addresses EU enlargement at Montenegro summit

During the EU–Western Balkans Summit in Tivat, Montenegro, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized that the EU remains open to candidate countries that fulfill their necessary obligations. He highlighted that the current Cyprus presidency has provided significant momentum to the accession processes of Montenegro, Albania, Moldova, and Ukraine. Regarding Turkey, which remains an official EU candidate, Christodoulides stated that the EU and the Republic of Cyprus are prepared to respond if Ankara meets its required obligations. Conversely, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has recently claimed that Turkey’s EU membership path is being blocked for purely political reasons related to the Cyprus issue. Erdogan described EU decisions regarding Turkey as erroneous and unfair, citing a decades-long history since Turkey's initial 1959 application. The diplomatic discourse remains defined by these conflicting views on the causes of the stalled accession negotiations.
