Cyprus Electricity Authority conducts nationwide inspections of photovoltaic systems

Since last Monday, the Distribution System Operator (DSO) of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has been conducting a nationwide campaign to identify illegal photovoltaic system extensions and unauthorized modifications. Officials utilized smart meter data and satellite imagery to detect violations, specifically in large commercial installations. The identified irregularities include unauthorized power capacity expansions and illegal inverter adjustments intended to artificially increase output, which threatens the stability of the power grid. Affected installations have been immediately disconnected, and owners face a €225 investigation fee alongside potential further fines. Separately, the EAC reported that while photovoltaic curtailment has decreased due to high summer energy demand, further grid stability measures remain necessary. The authority noted that peak demand is expected to reach approximately 1200 MW during summer, while grid instability issues may prompt renewed curtailments in mid-August when industrial electricity consumption declines.
