Cyprus launches national AI supercomputing infrastructure in partnership with NVIDIA
On June 5, 2025, the Republic of Cyprus announced the pilot phase of its new national Artificial Intelligence supercomputing infrastructure, hosted at the Cyprus Institute. This initiative follows a strategic partnership formed after meetings in San Francisco in April 2025 between President Nikos Christodoulides and NVIDIA representatives. Yiannis Iosifakis, an executive at NVIDIA, attended the presentation at the Presidential Palace alongside government officials including Deputy Minister Dr. Nikodemos Damianou. The infrastructure, which became operational on March 26, is now accessible to universities, research centers, public entities, and private businesses for pilot testing, with full access scheduled for August 1. By joining the EU's AI Factories network through the Pharos-CY project, Cyprus has secured 2.8% of the computing power from the Greek 'Daedalus' supercomputer. This project aims to bridge the gap in local high-performance computing capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign commercial platforms. Georgios Tsouloupas of the Cyprus Institute noted that the rapid implementation of the system was completed in less than 12 months.
