Escalation of military tensions in the Strait of Hormuz
On Saturday, U.S. Central Command reported that American forces shot down four Iranian drones allegedly targeting maritime traffic near the Strait of Hormuz. Following this, the U.S. military conducted strikes against Iranian coastal radar and surveillance sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it responded by firing missiles at U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, though the U.S. military stated that six missiles were intercepted and one failed to reach its target. Additionally, Iranian forces reported firing warning shots near the strait, claiming these actions were linked to U.S. naval redeployments. While Iranian media reported strikes on tankers and U.S. bases, it also officially denied reports of an attack on the port of Bandar Abbas. These clashes occurred amidst stalled indirect negotiations between the U.S. and Iran regarding an interim deal to end their three-month-old conflict. Tehran continues to seek the lifting of sanctions and access to oil revenues as part of any potential resolution. Kuwaiti and Bahraini authorities reported intercepting aerial threats and sounding emergency sirens, respectively.
