Cyprus hosts EU defense ministers and discusses regional security developments
On Monday, President Nikos Christodoulides met with Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias at the presidential palace in Nicosia to discuss regional security, the Cyprus problem, and the outcome of the EU informal defence ministers' meeting. The meeting followed an incident where Greek Minister Dendias reported wireless harassment by Turkish forces originating from the occupied territories during his flight. Earlier that day, EU defence ministers gathered in Nicosia, chaired by Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas, to address support for Ukraine, maritime security, and the development of common European defence capabilities. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas emphasized the need for increased pressure on Russia and cooperation among defence industries. President Christodoulides briefed Dendias on his earlier meeting with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the European Union's strategic autonomy in defense and security matters. The Greek minister concluded his visit by congratulating Cyprus on its successful six-month presidency of the EU Council.
