EU defense ministers meet in Nicosia to discuss security and support for Ukraine

The informal Foreign Affairs Council meeting involving EU defense ministers is taking place in Nicosia on June 7-8, 2026. The 27 ministers are gathering to address regional stability, emerging security threats, and priorities of the Common Security and Defence Policy. Key items on the agenda include strategic discussions on European support for the Ukrainian defense sector, specifically regarding the mobilization of funds from the European Peace Facility. Furthermore, participants will deliberate on maritime security, with a focus on freedom of navigation and measures to address the Russian shadow fleet. Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias arrived in Cyprus to participate in these meetings. Additionally, Dendias is scheduled to hold separate meetings with the President of Cyprus and the Archbishop. The ministers will also hold an informal exchange of views on the European Security Strategy during a working lunch.
