Exhibition linking Picasso and Cypriot ceramics opens in Barcelona

On Friday, an exhibition titled 'Picasso and Cyprus: Encounters with the Ceramics of the Mediterranean' opened at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. The event is part of the cultural program for the 2026 Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union and will remain open to the public until September 27, 2026. The collection displays selected ceramic works by Pablo Picasso alongside ancient Cypriot vessels and figurines to highlight artistic and morphological commonalities. Although Picasso never visited Cyprus, the exhibition demonstrates how he was influenced by ancient Cypriot antiquities found in European collections. The exhibition was inaugurated by Deputy Minister of Culture Vasiliki Kassianidou in the presence of Catalan government officials and municipal representatives from Barcelona. Curated by Eftychia Zachariou, Androula Michael, and Emmanuel Guigon, the display explores the artist's fascination with hybrid forms and symbols. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Antiquities, the Embassy of Cyprus in Spain, and the Picasso Museum.
