Picasso and Cyprus exhibition opens in Barcelona
The exhibition titled 'Picasso and Cyprus: Encounters with the Ceramics of the Mediterranean' officially opened on Friday at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. Inaugurated by Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou, the exhibition showcases a dialogue between Pablo Picasso’s ceramic works and ancient Cypriot pottery and figurines. The event is organized as part of the cultural program for the 2026 Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Although Picasso never visited Cyprus, the display highlights his engagement with Cypriot antiquities, which he studied through European collections and archaeological publications. Curated by Eftychia Zachariou, Andri Michael, and Emmanuel Guigon, the exhibition explores the influence of ancient forms and symbols on the artist’s mature work. Representatives from the Catalan government, Barcelona municipal authorities, and the diplomatic community attended the ceremony. The exhibition will remain open to the public until September 27, 2026.
