Reports of aerial incidents involving Turkish and Greek aircraft
Recent reports indicate two distinct sets of aerial incidents involving Turkish military aviation. In Cyprus, authorities reported that the aircraft carrying Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and other European defense officials were subjected to communication interference from the Ercan (Tymbou) control tower while approaching for an EU meeting in Nicosia. Additionally, two Turkish F-16 fighters were reportedly observed monitoring these state aircraft at a distance. Separately, the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA) announced that on Saturday, June 6, the Turkish Air Force committed nine violations of Greek airspace. These included four armed F-16s flying in the Northeast and Southeast Aegean, along with two ATR-72 maritime patrol aircraft, two UAVs, and one helicopter. Greek authorities confirmed one instance of a dogfight involving a standby Greek fighter jet. The Turkish aircraft also reportedly committed eight violations of air traffic regulations within the Athens Flight Information Region. The Greek military stated that all foreign aircraft were identified and intercepted according to standard international protocols.
