EU regulatory leaders discuss future of capital market supervision
Verena Ross, President of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), and George Theocharides, Chairman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), held discussions regarding the future of EU financial market supervision. The dialogue focused on the necessity of a more consistent and effective supervisory framework across the European Union to address increasing market complexity and technological advancements. Ross identified three core pillars for ESMA: investor protection, ensuring orderly market functions, and maintaining financial stability. Both officials addressed the challenges posed by cross-border operations, the rapid growth of crypto-assets, and the integration of artificial intelligence. They emphasized that a unified approach is required to prevent regulatory fragmentation caused by divergent national interpretations of EU rules. Furthermore, the discussions highlighted the specific role that smaller member states like Cyprus can fulfill within an increasingly integrated European financial landscape. This initiative is part of a broader agenda to rebuild investor confidence and mitigate systemic risks in the European economy.
