Cyprus and France sign Status of Forces Agreement in Nicosia
On Monday, June 8, 2026, the Republic of Cyprus and France signed a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) in Nicosia. The document was signed by Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas and French Defence Minister Catherine Vautrin on the sidelines of an informal meeting of EU defence ministers. The agreement establishes a legal framework governing the rights, obligations, and presence of French military personnel on Cypriot territory. President Nikos Christodoulides noted that the pact facilitates humanitarian operations in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, while also advancing EU strategic autonomy. According to Minister Palmas, the deal provides strategic depth to Cyprus and reinforces its role as a regional pillar of stability. The framework covers logistical access, jurisdiction over personnel, tax arrangements, and defence coordination. This agreement follows discussions initiated during President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Nicosia in April 2026. While the primary focus is on humanitarian support and security cooperation, both parties emphasized that the agreement does not constitute a formal military alliance. The partnership also involves joint efforts in defense procurement and cooperation with Greece and Italy.
