Edek leadership turmoil follows electoral defeat
Following the EDEK party's failure to secure parliamentary seats in the May 24, 2026, elections, the party's Central Committee met in Nicosia on June 7, 2026. EDEK received 3.25 percent of the vote, marking the worst result in its 56-year history. During the meeting, party president Nikos Anastasiou submitted his resignation, taking responsibility for the outcome, but the Central Committee unanimously refused to accept it. The committee also decided to hold a regular ideological, political, and electoral congress in November 2026, preceded by a statutory congress. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for June 28, 2026, to finalize the procedures for these upcoming events. The committee's decision confirms that Anastasiou will remain in his position to continue efforts toward party unity. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Secretary of the Central Committee, Lefteris Georgiou (or Androu, according to varying sources), also tendered his resignation during the same period of internal restructuring.
