North Korea declares nuclear status non-negotiable ahead of Xi Jinping visit
Kim Yo Jong, senior official and sister of leader Kim Jong Un, stated that North Korea's status as a nuclear power is non-negotiable. She characterized U.S. efforts toward the country's denuclearization as an 'anachronistic dream' and dismissed claims that Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump had confirmed such goals during previous summits as false. These remarks were published in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper ahead of Xi Jinping's visit to Pyongyang, his first in nearly seven years. Recently, North Korea revealed a new nuclear material production facility, with Kim Jong Un calling for an exponential increase in the nation's atomic arsenal. Analysts suggest this facility is intended to improve North Korea's negotiating position and justify the acceleration of its weapons programs. Pyongyang maintains that its nuclear weapons provide necessary security against potential foreign intervention, especially in light of historical U.S. actions elsewhere. North Korea officially enshrined its status as a nuclear-armed state in its constitution in 2023.
