Candidacy announcements for the Aglantzia deputy mayor vacancy

Following the election of Andreas Konstantinou to the House of Representatives, the position of deputy mayor of Aglantzia became vacant, prompting preparations for a by-election scheduled for September. Dr. Andri Chatziandreou, a 44-year-old musician and academic, has announced her candidacy for the position. While official confirmation is pending, she is widely expected to be the candidate supported by AKEL. Concurrently, the Democratic Rally (DISY) party has been undergoing an internal selection process to nominate its candidate. Initially, four individuals expressed interest in the DISY nomination: Avraam Georgiou, Christos Liverdos, Prokopis Prokopiou, and Varvara (Vera) Tzirkalli Petrou. Following the withdrawal of Avraam Georgiou, the Nicosia District Secretariat of DISY decided to propose current municipal councilor Prokopis Prokopiou as the party's candidate. This proposal is expected to be finalized by the party's Political Bureau, effectively concluding the internal selection process and avoiding a contested primary.
