Candidates emerge for Aglantzia deputy mayor vacancy

The Democratic Rally (DISY) has received four nominations for the position of deputy mayor of Aglantzia, following a vacancy. The candidates include Avraam Georgiou, Christos Liverdos, Prokopis Prokopiou, and Varvara (Vera) Petrou. Since multiple candidates have registered, DISY will hold internal elections to determine their party nominee, in accordance with their statutes. The official by-election for the deputy mayorship is scheduled for June 28, 2026, with official nomination filing set for June 18. Meanwhile, other political parties including AKEL and DIKO are currently evaluating their own strategies. There is speculation regarding potential cooperation or the formation of a joint candidate to avoid a contested race. DIKO is reportedly considering Costas Kortas, a former mayor of Aglantzia, though no final decisions have been made by the party leadership. Christos Liverdos is currently serving as acting deputy mayor due to his performance in the 2024 elections.
