Candidates emerge for Aglantzia deputy mayoral by-election

The Democratic Rally (DISY) party has initiated internal processes to select a candidate for the upcoming by-election for the deputy mayor of Aglantzia, scheduled for June 28, 2026. Initially, four candidates submitted their names to the party's Nicosia district offices: Avraam Georgiou, Christos Liverdos, Prokopis Prokopiou, and Varvara (Vera) Tzirkalli Petrou. However, Avraam Georgiou subsequently withdrew his candidacy, citing his status as a non-active party member. The remaining candidates are now subject to internal party procedures to determine the final representative. Other major political parties, including AKEL and DIKO, are also currently discussing their potential involvement, with possibilities of supporting individual candidates or pursuing a consensus nominee. Formal nomination submissions for the official election are slated for June 18, 2026.
