Obituary of Dimitris Photi, the veteran street musician from Cyprus

Dimitris Photi, a long-time street musician in Cyprus, passed away at the age of 99. Born on April 10, 1919, in Famagusta, he relocated to Larnaca in 1974 due to the conflict on the island. Photi was a self-taught musician who began playing the violin at age 14 and collected various instruments, including a Stradivarius. He was also a polyglot who studied English, Turkish, and Russian independently throughout his life. His daughter, Mili Photi, stated that he held a deep affinity for Russia, frequently performing Russian folk songs like 'Kalinka' and 'Ochi Chernye'. Photi emphasized the importance of continuous education, requiring his children to pursue higher academic degrees. Following his death, his family inherited his collection of musical instruments. He is remembered by his descendants as a disciplined individual with strong personal principles.
