Assessment of the strategy for the development of the primary sector in Cyprus (2024–2029)
The Cypriot government is implementing a strategic plan for the primary sector (2024–2029) consisting of 11 specific actions with a total budget of approximately €106-109 million. A study by the Economic Research Centre of the University of Cyprus projects that the strategy will generate an economic output of €138-139 million, contribute €70-71 million to the national GDP, and create 1,370 new jobs. Progress reports indicate that two actions have been completed, with seven currently in progress and two others proceeding toward a 2029 deadline. The agricultural sector faces significant challenges, including climate change-induced production losses projected at 15-30% by 2050, which could cost the economy between €650 million and €1.9 billion. Critics argue the sector has been neglected in previous years, citing water scarcity and disease outbreaks as persistent issues. The aging workforce and extreme weather conditions further threaten long-term viability. The study highlights that every €1 million invested is expected to yield €1.3 million in economic output and 13 new jobs. Ultimately, the plan aims to modernize the sector and mitigate the severe risks posed by environmental shifts.
