Cypriot parliament committee chairs assigned after committee selection session

On Friday, the House Selection Committee finalized the distribution of the 16 parliamentary committee chairs, maintaining the same number of committees as in the previous legislative term. The agreement was reached following a session that lasted over two and a half hours, concluding at 12:30 PM. DISY and AKEL were each assigned five committee chairmanships, while DIKO and ELAM were each assigned three. Specifically, DISY retains chairs for Foreign Affairs, Commerce, Health, Legal Affairs, and Institutions. AKEL holds chairs for Interior, Labor, Agriculture, Refugees, and Human Rights. ELAM took the chairs for Defense, Environment, and Transport, while DIKO maintains Finance, Education, and Audit. AKEL MP Giorgos Loukaidis expressed strong opposition, criticizing the process and the allocation of the Defense Committee to ELAM, claiming it resulted from pre-arranged plans led by the President of the House. Conversely, DISY rejected the accusations, describing AKEL's stance as toxic and disruptive to the consensus needed for the parliament to resume its work. The final composition of these committees is scheduled for approval at the plenary session on June 18, with legislative work intended to begin on June 22, 2026.
