Cypriot parliamentary party leaders discuss committee appointments
Cypriot party leaders held a meeting on June 9, 2026, to discuss the formation of a Selection Committee tasked with distributing parliamentary committee chairmanships and member assignments. The Selection Committee, which includes House President Annita Demetriou and eight representatives from the four parties with parliamentary groups (DISY, AKEL, DIKO, and ELAM), will be finalized during the plenary session on June 18, 2026. Parties that do not form parliamentary groups, such as Alma and Direct Democracy, are currently excluded from holding committee chairs. There is a consensus to retain the existing 16 parliamentary committees, as the proposal to reduce them to 14 failed to gain sufficient support. Discussions are also underway to potentially increase committee membership from 11 to 12 to ensure broader representation. DISY and AKEL, the two largest parties, are each expected to claim five chairmanships, while DIKO and ELAM are expected to receive three each. Some political friction exists regarding committee composition and the potential involvement of far-right representatives, though efforts continue to reach a consensus before the next legislative phase begins.
