Cyprus parliamentary committee chairmanships finalized
On June 12, 2026, the Selection Committee of the Cypriot Parliament reached an agreement on the distribution of committee chairmanships, ending a period of deadlock. The final decision was supported by DISY, DIKO, and ELAM, while AKEL voted against the proposal. DISY retains five chairmanships: Institutions, Legal Affairs, Health, Foreign Affairs, and Trade. AKEL also holds five committees: Labor, Human Rights, Refugees, Agriculture, and Interior. DIKO secured three chairs, specifically Finance, Education, and Audit, after DISY yielded the Finance Committee. ELAM was granted three committees: Defense, Environment, and Transport. The allocation process was marked by intense friction, particularly regarding the Environment and Defense committees, which were contested by multiple parties. AKEL expressed strong opposition to ELAM assuming any chairmanships and criticized Speaker Annita Demetriou for the handling of the process.
