Process for staffing parliamentary committees in Cyprus
The Cypriot parliament is currently beginning the process of staffing its 16 committees. This procedure starts with selecting committee chairs, followed by determining the composition of individual committee members. A meeting of political leaders is scheduled for Tuesday at 12:00 PM to discuss the formation of the Selection Committee. On Thursday, the plenary session will elect eight members to this body, who will then finalize the distribution of chairmanships. The absence of EDEK, DIPA, and the Greens from the new parliament has left the chairs for the Defense, Environment, and Transport committees vacant. DISY, currently holding 17 seats, has stated it intends to reclaim its five previous chairmanships—Foreign Affairs, Legal, Institutions, Energy, and Health—while seeking additional roles due to the shift from a seven-party to a different parliamentary structure. AKEL previously held five chairmanships as well, including Interior and Refugees. Overall, the composition of the committees is not expected to change significantly from the previous five-year term.
