Cypriot animal welfare organizations suspend stray cat sterilization programs
The Federation of Animal Welfare Organizations of Cyprus (CVA) and various partner groups have announced an indefinite suspension of all new Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) activities. This decision follows persistent reports of verbal and physical harassment, intimidation, and obstruction of volunteers involved in stray cat management. Tensions reportedly escalated after a February 2026 incident involving the removal of cats from a supermarket in Latsia, which led to false accusations of animal theft against volunteers. In recent cases, volunteers were prevented from conducting scheduled procedures, and in one instance, were taken to a police station and forced to release five trapped cats. The organizations have sent a formal letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, requesting better protection and clear, official authorizations for their work. The groups argue that without state support and guaranteed security, they can no longer operate effectively. They warn that this cessation will lead to an increase in the stray cat population, creating future challenges for local authorities and worsening conditions for the animals. The resumption of programs is now contingent on receiving official documentation and effective safety guarantees for volunteers.
