Yorgos Lanthimos discusses potential break from filmmaking

Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, who moved to Los Angeles after the 2018 film The Favourite, has released three movies in three consecutive years: Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and the upcoming Bugonia. Following this period of intense productivity, Lanthimos has indicated in a recent Financial Times interview that he may take an extended break from directing. He described his current interest in photography as a liberating and meditative process that lacks the industrial pressures of financing and strict goal-setting associated with cinema. The director openly questioned whether he will make more films, stating he needs to rediscover the joy of creation without self-imposed pressure. He metaphorically linked the conclusion of his film Bugonia, which depicts the end of humanity, to his own career trajectory. Lanthimos emphasized that he wants to let his future path unfold naturally rather than forcing his next steps.
