French fighter jet intercepts and destroys drone in Latvian airspace
On Monday, a French Rafale fighter jet operating under a NATO mission shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Latvian airspace from Russia. The Latvian military reported that the drone crossed the border due to Russian electromagnetic interference, though it did not identify the operator. In response to the breach, Latvian authorities initially advised residents in eastern regions to seek shelter. While the alert was briefly lifted after the interception, a subsequent air threat warning was issued later the same day. The French aircraft involved is stationed at the Siauliai airbase in Lithuania as part of the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission. Recent incidents involving drones entering airspace in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have raised concerns regarding the potential spillover of the conflict in Ukraine. While Latvia points to Russian electronic warfare as the cause of these incursions, Kyiv has also attributed similar past incidents to Russian interference affecting drone flight paths. This event remains part of a broader series of security incidents along the eastern NATO border.
