Armenia's governing Civil Contract party wins parliamentary election
Armenia's governing Civil Contract party, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, secured a parliamentary majority by winning 49.8% of the vote. The election, which saw a 59% voter turnout, follows a period of political turbulence and the 2023 military defeat by Azerbaijan. Pro-Russian opposition groups gained significant traction, securing a combined 31% of the vote and guaranteed parliamentary seats. Pashinyan characterized the results as a victory for regional prosperity and cooperation. His administration aims to diversify international alliances by strengthening ties with Western partners while navigating peace negotiations with Azerbaijan and Turkey. The opposition has previously criticized Pashinyan for his handling of the conflict and his shift away from the traditional alliance with Russia. Economic indicators, including a doubling of GDP per capita since 2018, served as a point of contention and support during the campaign. The newly elected parliament faces the dual challenge of domestic stability and complex regional normalization efforts.
