United Nations initiatives to resume Cyprus negotiations
Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, the personal envoy of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has held meetings in Nicosia with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. The discussions focused on organizing a potential 5+1 informal conference, aimed for late July or early August in Geneva. Guterres is seeking to finalize a framework for negotiations before his term ends, moving beyond simple confidence-building measures to address broader issues like governance models, energy security, and EU-Turkey relations. While the UN aims to reaffirm past convergences and reach a strategic agreement, the Turkish side has emphasized conditions regarding political equality and set timetables. Sources indicate that Turkey may be re-evaluating its approach due to regional geopolitical concerns and potential integration with European interests. The success of this initiative remains uncertain, as parties debate the feasibility of moving toward a loose federal structure while maintaining existing UN resolutions.
