Court proceedings continue in Nicosia regarding the 2019 death of 14-year-old Stylianos

The Nicosia District Court is hearing a case regarding the 2019 suicide of 14-year-old Stylianos. Criminal investigator Andreas Andreou testified that the boy should have been placed under the care of the Social Welfare Services (SWS) between 2010 and 2012 to ensure his safety. Andreou noted that while some actions were taken by officials, they failed to investigate reports of physical abuse and problematic family conditions effectively, including allegations that the father beat the child. Defense attorneys for the charged SWS officials challenged the investigator's conclusions, questioning the level of involvement and knowledge of specific employees regarding the family file. One defense counsel argued that the supervisor of the Latsia SWS office had direct access to the file and provided instructions without involving other staff. Andreou confirmed that no medical evidence of physical injuries was collected during the investigation, though non-medical school reports of beatings exist. The court continues to examine the handling of the case and the SWS departmental manual.
