Allagi retains leadership in OELMEK teachers' union elections
On June 9, 2026, teachers in Cyprus participated in elections to determine the new leadership of the OELMEK union. A total of 5,696 valid ballots were cast, representing a significant increase in voter turnout compared to 4,846 in 2023. The 'Allagi' faction secured first place with 46.10% of the vote (2,626 votes) and maintained its 10 seats in the 21-member Central Administrative Council. 'Proodeftiki' finished second with 28.56% (1,627 votes), gaining one additional seat for a total of 6. DIKI retained its 3 seats with 12.87% (733 votes), while the newly formed Independent Voice of Educators (AFEK) entered the council with 7.01% (399 votes) and one seat. Nea Kinisi received 5.46% (311 votes), losing one of its previous two seats. The election results will guide the organization's policy and engagement with the Ministry of Education over the next three years.
