Turkey designates Granicus battlefield as a protected historic site

The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism has officially declared the site of the Battle of the Granicus, located in the Biga district of Çanakkale, as a protected historic and archaeological area. Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy stated that the decision follows extensive archaeological research and the analysis of ancient historical sources. The location is recognized as the site of Alexander the Great's first major victory over the Persian Empire in 334 B.C. The designation was formally approved by the Çanakkale Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. Turkish authorities aim to facilitate further scientific research and develop the site into a cultural tourism destination. Planned activities include site maintenance, restoration, and the eventual opening of the area to the public. The government considers this a milestone in global military history that paved the way for the Macedonian conquest of Asia.
