New foot-and-mouth disease case confirmed in Mammari
Veterinary services in Cyprus have identified a new case of foot-and-mouth disease at a livestock facility in Mammari, Nicosia, involving approximately 80 adult goats and sheep. The infection was confirmed using the NSP ELISA laboratory testing method within an area previously declared as infected. Authorities have initiated standard protocols for the rapid culling of the affected animals to prevent further spread. While the President of the Pancyprian Veterinary Association, Dimitris Epaminondas, previously stated that culling operations were largely complete and reported negative results from recent screenings, this new case demonstrates ongoing risks. New batches of vaccines have arrived in Cyprus and are currently awaiting customs clearance for deployment. Current national vaccination coverage rates stand at 92% for cattle, 80% for small ruminants, and 41% for pigs. A total of 80,000 animals have been culled across 118 affected units to date. Decisions regarding the culling of a small unit housing traditional red cattle remain pending, while some rare breeds have reportedly been exempted from the measures.
