Supreme Court annuls search warrant against lawyer Nikos Clerides

On June 9, 2026, the Supreme Court of Cyprus issued a Certiorari order annulling a search warrant previously issued in April 2026 against lawyer Nikos Clerides and his firm, Lefkos Clerides & Sons LLC. The warrant had authorized searches of the lawyer's home, office, and vehicles in relation to the 'Sandy case' concerning police investigations into leaked messages. The Supreme Court ruled that the Nicosia District Court exceeded its jurisdiction by failing to establish a sufficient link between the items sought and the specific properties searched. While the lower court confirmed a reasonable suspicion of crimes and the applicant's involvement, it did not record the legally required connection between the objects and the premises. The attorney-general’s office did not oppose the application, acknowledging procedural deficiencies. Consequently, all seized materials must be returned to the owner. Furthermore, the court determined that any evidence obtained from these searches is considered inadmissible. Defense lawyer Alexandros Clerides stated this decision is the first step in restoring the rights of his client.
