Concerns over hygiene in food delivery bags in Cyprus

The Cyprus Consumers' Association, led by Marios Drousiotis, conducted laboratory tests on two food delivery bags following public complaints regarding hygiene standards. The tests revealed high levels of pathogenic organisms capable of causing food poisoning. Although the association noted that the sample was not representative, it highlighted the potential health risks. Drousiotis stated that the issue was known to the Health Services even before a separate food poisoning incident at a wedding in Limassol, though that event accelerated current discussions. In response, Herodotus Herodotou of the Health Services announced that the department is planning coordinated inspection campaigns involving the Police and local municipalities. Officials emphasized that logistical challenges make individual field checks difficult, necessitating broader cooperation and legislative changes. Additionally, the Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) stated that food safety is a non-negotiable priority, asserting that businesses are responsible for maintaining hygiene throughout the supply chain. Authorities have issued recommendations for delivery personnel to follow strict safety protocols.
