Health authorities demand stricter food delivery hygiene controls in Cyprus

The Cyprus Health Services have officially requested that OEB and CCCI strengthen hygiene protocols for food delivery platforms such as Foody and Wolt. This follows a rise in consumer complaints regarding unsanitary transport boxes, some of which are allegedly contaminated with food residue or animal presence. Marios Drousiotis, President of the Cyprus Consumers Association, reported that laboratory tests on two delivery bags revealed high levels of three types of pathogenic organisms capable of causing food poisoning. While major outbreaks are currently limited due to sealed packaging, concerns persist regarding the health risks posed by high temperatures and improper disinfection of delivery equipment. Authorities noted that the rapid growth of the sector, combined with the status of delivery drivers as self-employed individuals—often non-residents—complicates regulatory oversight. Employers and platforms have been urged to provide training and replace delivery gear every six months. Industry representatives, including OEB, stated that existing safety protocols are being reviewed in light of a recent mass food poisoning incident at a wedding in Limassol.
